Foods To Stay Away From During Early Pregnancy

Foods To Stay Away From During Early Pregnancy

Pregnancy comes with all sorts of warnings from what you can consume to what you are not supposed to consume. Combined with all the expectations, it can be very overwhelming because, all of a sudden, you are supposed to stay away from certain foods just because you are pregnant.

Even though this may sound a bit unfair, it comes as a necessity, mainly because you have to make sure that your health and that of the baby is good.

Pregnant women should always consult their gynecologist to know what will work for them and what doesn’t because pregnancy experiences are different for every woman.

While pregnant women are expected to take their daily prenatal vitamins containing folic acid to prevent any congenital disabilities of the spinal cord and the brain, they also need to consider what they are putting in their bodies carefully. These are some of the foods you should avoid during early pregnancy:

Sugary Foods

The last thing you need while you are pregnant is having to deal with extra weight. Eating a lot of refined sugars while you are pregnant can often lead to excess weight gain that you eventually have to deal with postpartum.

Pregnancy comes with insatiable cravings. In just a few months, you can find yourself craving ice cream or cake during your pregnancy, which eventually leads to excessive weight gain.

However, while indulging your pregnancy cravings can be fun, you also position yourself for gestational diabetes and other issues to do with cholesterol.

Hence during pregnancy, we advocate that you opt for a healthy alternative to curb pregnancy cravings. Plus, you don't want to have to deal with postpartum baby weight after giving birth, do you?

Fatty Foods

While you are pregnant, you have to stop yourself from racing out to the closest fast food to satisfy your hunger or cravings. Places with high-fat foods are places you should avoid during early pregnancy as well as throughout your pregnancy.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should avoid all fats all-together, some fats are right for you while others are not. Some healthy fats include; avocados, olive oil, nuts, and dark chocolate.

Highly Processed Foods

We love highly processed foods because they taste delicious. However, these foods tend to be full of trans fats, white four sugar, hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors, and fillers.

These foods should be avoided during pregnancy because they are not suitable for you or your unborn baby. Hence, the wise thing to do is stay away from junk food and try finding a healthy food alternative to satisfy your pregnancy cravings.

Food Left Out For Long

We tend to put out trays and dishes of food, especially at parties; however, pregnant women should stay away from foods that have been left out for more than two hours. You should also skip leftover meals.

Foods that haven't been appropriately refrigerated tend to attract unwanted bacteria that can cause certain infections during pregnancy. These infections can be gravely dangerous for your unborn baby and even put you at a risk of miscarriage.
