Cape Dutch - Media Night
Cape Dutch Restaurant has been on my list for quite some time. It was a no brainer when we were invited to their exclusive media night. National Braai Day is September 23 and they were testing a new menu specifically to celebrate that day.
I had no idea what to expect so I was blown away. The front of the building does not tell the tale of what you will embark on. Upon entering, I was immediately drawn into a lobby area unlike any I'd ever seen. The lighting was dim and lit with decorative tea light candles and wall fixtures.
I sipped on an exquisite cabernet/pinot noir wine that was sensational. I'm not a big wine drinker but this one was incredible. It had a subtle sweet and oak flavor to it. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name. This was the start to a perfect night.
Approximately fifteen or so local professionals were invited to this gala. Some were media personalities, chefs, journalists, tv producers and even a tough food critic. Many had been here before while others were experiencing the magic for the very first time.
Walking into the dining room was like opening up a whole new world. It was a completely different feel from the lobby. The big windows, bright walls and hight ceilings created an atmosphere that was familiar. I never would have imagined, just from seeing the front, that I would go through such a visual adventure.
The tables and seats were welcoming. I cannot remember last time, if ever, I've been impressed with an eatery before taking a bite. Our table had a front row seat in front of the braai.
What is a braai? It is a distinctive grill most native to South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi. The one at Cape Dutch is a massive size. It takes up most of the kitchen and has a clear glass window for your viewing pleasure.
A beautiful charcuterie board put a smile on every table as they arrived. I recognized many of the items. Caperberry, peppadew, tomato and ginger chutney, crostini, cranberry walnut cracker, pate, goat cheese, swiss and so much more.
Being vegetarian can pose a problem at most spots for me. I had no issue here. Although the braai burger looked incredible, my sights were set on the fish. Honestly, it was the best fish I have had in a while. It wasn't breaded and it wasn't fried but it was so flavorful. The fish was cooked to perfection and was accompanied by a jalapeño sauce that gave it some spice.
Anyone that knows me knows that I am a fries connoisseur. The pommes frites not only looked the part but tasted so good they didn't even need ketchup. I mean Wow! They were thick cut steak fries that didn't need a condiment.
Last but certainly not least, it was time for dessert. First out was a raisin bread with chocolate soup. The flavors were unique and I enjoyed it. However, the bread pudding sold me forever. This decadent treat was dazzled raspberry sauce, fresh fruits and homemade whipped cream. I wanted to lick the plate. Oh my goodness. It was wonderful! Some places overcook/undercook bread pudding. That was not the case tonight.
