Does Nevada care for its elders?

  • California offers the worst access to elderly care in America, with an overall ‘Care Score’ of 18.61

  • Hawaii offers the second-worst access to elderly care in America, with a score of 19.15

  • Iowa offers the best access to elderly care, with an overall care score of 70.67

 

California has been named the worst state for access to elderly care, according to a new study.  

Home hospital beds provider, SonderCare, conducted research into which states offer the best and worst access to elderly care. They examined several factors, including the number of nursing homes and respite facilities per 100,000 residents, nursing home occupancy rates, monthly costs of private and semi-private nursing homes, and the percentage of nursing homes with zero deficiencies. 

An overall ‘Care Score’ was then calculated based on these metrics to find the states offering the worst access to elderly care. 

 

  1. 1. California – Care score: 18.61 out of 100 

California is ranked as the state offering the worst access to elderly care, achieving an overall score of 18.61 out of 100.  

California has a total of 1,170 nursing homes per 100,000 residents, which is the second highest amount in America. California also has a total of 409 respite facilities per 100,000 residents, the third highest amount in the country. Despite having some of the highest numbers of nursing homes and respite facilities, the occupancy rate is 85%, the third highest in the country, reducing accessibility to any possible new residents. 

The monthly cost of a semi-private room in a nursing home in California is $9,794 on average, which is the 16th most expensive in America. Meanwhile, the monthly fee for a private room in a nursing home is $14,113, also making it the third most expensive in the country. 

The percentage of nursing homes in California without any deficiencies is 0%. Deficiencies are given to nursing homes for any problems that may result in a negative impact on the health and safety of the facility. On average across the US, 6% of nursing facilities were found to have zero deficiencies, which places California below the average rate.  

 

  1. 2. Hawaii – Care Score: 19.15 out of 100 

The state offering the second-worst access to elderly care is Hawaii, with a score of 19.15 out of 100.  

There are 43 nursing homes per 100,000 residents in Hawaii, the fourth lowest number of any US state. There are also a total of 12 respite facilities per 100,000 state residents, which is the second lowest in the country. The occupancy rate in Hawaii is 76%, which is the 12th highest in America. 

The cost of a semi-private room in a nursing home is $12,501 a month, the fifth highest in the country. While a private room costs $14,113 a month on average, ranking Hawaii as the third highest for this metric. 

The percentage of nursing homes in the state with zero deficiencies is 0%, which is below the national average (6%). 

 

  1. 3. West Virginia – Care Score: 21.18 out of 100 

West Virginia is third on this list, with an overall care score of 21.18 out of 100. 

There are 123 nursing homes per 100,000 people in West Virginia, the 15th lowest amount in America. There are also 13 respite facilities per 100,000 residents, the third lowest in the country. West Virginia has an overall occupancy rate of 86%, which is the second highest in the US.  

A semi-private nursing home room costs $11,619 per month, ranking it the eighth most expensive in the country. The monthly cost for a private nursing home room is around $12,212, which is the ninth most expensive in the US. 

The percentage of nursing homes in West Virginia that do not have any deficiencies is also 0% 

 

  1. 4. Connecticut – Care Score: 21.25 out of 100 

Connecticut offers the fourth-worst access to elderly care in America, with an overall care score of 21.25 out of 100.  

There are 203 nursing homes per 100,000 residents in Connecticut, the 22nd lowest in the US. There are a total of 43 respite facilities per 100,000 residents, which is the 13th lowest in the country. The nursing homes in Connecticut have an overall occupancy rate of 81%, the seventh highest in America. 

A semi-private nursing home room costs $13,764 monthly, the second most expensive in America. A private nursing home room costs $15,170 monthly, the second most expensive in the country. 

The percentage of nursing homes in Connecticut with no deficiencies is 1%, the second lowest in America. 

 

  1. 5. Alaska – Care Score: 21.41 out of 100  

Fifth on the list is Alaska, with a care score of 21.41 out of 100.  

There are 20 nursing homes in Alaska per 100,000 residents, the lowest in the country. There is also a total of 24 respite facilities per 100,000 residents, the eighth lowest. The nursing homes in Alaska have an occupancy rate of 87% which is the highest in America.  

A semi-private nursing home room costs $31,512 per month, the most expensive in the country. Meanwhile, a private nursing home room costs $31,512 monthly, the most expensive in America.  

The percentage of nursing homes in Alaska with no deficiencies is 10%, which is above the national average. 

 

  1. 6. New York – Care Score: 21.45 out of 100 

New York is sixth on the list, with an overall care score of 21.45 out of 100. 

There are 606 nursing homes per 100,000 people in New York, the seventh highest amount in the US. There are 208 respite facilities per 100,000 residents, the sixth highest in the country. Despite these high numbers, the nursing homes in New York have an occupancy rate of 86%, the second highest in America. 

A semi-private nursing home room costs around $12,775 per month, the third most expensive in America. The cost of a private nursing home room is $13,233 per month, which is the fifth most expensive 

The percentage of nursing homes in New York with no deficiencies is 7%, which is just above the national average.  

 

  1. 7. Massachusetts – Care Score: 24.84 out of 100 

Seventh on the list is Massachusetts, with an overall care score of 24.84 out of 100. 

There are a total of 353 nursing homes per 100,000 residents in Massachusetts, the 14th highest amount in the US. There are also 69 respite facilities per 100,000 residents, ranking Massachusetts as the 24th highest in this factor. Massachusetts has the tenth highest occupancy rate of 78%, meaning there is little availability for new residents in the state’s existing care homes. 

A semi-private nursing home room costs $12,623 per month, ranking Massachusetts as the fourth most expensive in the US. A private nursing home room costs $13,535 per month, also the fourth most expensive in America.    

The percentage of nursing homes in Massachusetts that do not have any deficiencies is 3%, which is below the national average.  

 

  1. 8. Nevada – Care Score: 26.13 out of 100 

Eighth on the list is Nevada, with an overall care score of 26.13 out of 100.  

There are 67 nursing homes per 100,000 people in Nevada, the 7th lowest figure of any state. There are 47 respite facilities per 100,000 residents, which is the 14th lowest in the country. The nursing homes in Nevada have an occupancy rate of 77%, the 11th highest in America. 

The cost of a semi-private nursing home room is $9,216 per month which is the 18th most expensive in America. A private nursing home room costs $10,007 per month, the 18th most expensive in the nation.
