New research has revealed the most sleepless states in the US, with Hawaii coming out on top.

The study conducted by legal cannabis brand Exhale Wellness analyzed the latest data from the United Health Foundation’s American Health Rankings to see which states had the highest percentage of adults who reported sleeping, on average, fewer than seven hours a night.

It found that Hawaii is the most sleepless state in the US, with 45.4% of adults reporting sleeping, on average, less than seven hours in a 24-hour period. 42.8% of adults over 65 reported insufficient sleep, whereas 47.2% of adults aged 45-64 said the same, followed by 46.2% for adults aged 18-44.

Coming in second place is West Virginia, where 40.67% of adults reported insufficient sleep. While 47.10% of those aged 45-64 reported a lack of sleep in the study, only 31.90% of adults over 65 said the same in the state. Additionally, 43% of adults aged 18-44 reported insufficient sleep.

Coming in third place is the state of Alabama, where 39.27% of adults reported insufficient sleep. Both adults aged 45-64 and 18-44 had the same percentage for poor sleep at 43.6%, and adults aged 65+ reported less in the state with a percentage of just 30.60%.

Kentucky came in fourth place on the list, with 38.73% of all adults reporting insufficient sleep. This is split up into a percentage of 33.90% for adults aged 65 and over and 42.40% for 45 to 64-year-olds, followed by a percentage of 39.90% for adults aged 18 to 44.

Rounding out the top five is Louisiana, where 38.50% of adults in the state report getting fewer than seven hours of sleep daily. This is made up of 32% of people over 65 reporting insufficient sleep, 40.50% of 45 to 64-year-olds saying the same, and a percentage of 43% of 18 to 44-year-olds as well.
